Bob Weir: Rock & Roll Birthday
October 16, 1947: Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead was born.
Bobby is a dynamite songwriter (particularly in collaboration with John Perry Barlow) and one of my favorite rock vocalists. Whether he’s performing with The Dead or RatDog, he’s one of those cats that I see live every chance I get.
In honor of Bobby’s birthday, I’ve been listening to his Summerfest show from 7-5-07 and the 8-16-08 concert at the Comcast Center, both of which I was privileged to attend. At Summerfest he opened with “Shakedown Street,” followed by two Bob Dylan tunes, “Maggie’s Farm” and “Queen Jane Approximately.” The Comcast show, which my daughters and I caught during a family vacation in Boston, included my favorite RatDog song, “Money for Gasoline,” as well as a smoldering version of The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” and another pair from Dylan…and after that amazing set we were blessed to watch the Allman Brothers tear it up.
Happy Birthday, Bobby!
