Rock & Roll History: November 6
A few tidbits of Rock & Roll History for November 6th:
1965: In the first concert produced by the late great Bill Graham, the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead played a benefit for San Francisco’s Mime Troupe Appeal. The Airplane had a HUGE influence on me as a kid and I’ve been part of the Dead tribe for more than thirty years. Additionally, Bill Graham was one of the most influential cats in SF’s psychedelice rock era.
1965: The Rolling Stones hit #1 with the song “Get Off Of My Cloud.”
1968: Joe Cocker’s phenomenal interpretation of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” was the #1 hit in England. I freakin’ love Joe and saw him again a couple times this past spring. Ever since he quit smoking several year back his voice sounds phenomenal again.
1971: The Who released “Behind Blue Eyes” from the Desert Island Disc Who’s Next. I remember the first time my brother played that album for me and I asked if it was a greatest hits record.
1975: The Sex Pistols played their first gig at St. Martin’s School of Art in London. Legend has it that within ten minutes the school pulled the plug on the band’s amplifiers. Shocking!
