The Beatles: Idols of the Philistines
On this date in 1968, The New York Times quoted the sovietic critic A. Martinosa, who said that the Beatles had become the rich idols of the Philistines.
Speaking for Philistines everywhere, I concur.

Billy Joel helped me mow the lawn yesterday.
At this point you may be asking “Whatchu talkin’ bout Willis?”
Like many folks who deal with bipolar disorder, day-to-day living is often baffling to me. In this case, that means forgetting to take the lawn mower in for a tuneup and blade sharpening until about the time I needed to use it. Consequently, for a few days I’d been getting “the look” from the neighbors in our cul de sac of finely manicured lawns.
Fortunately, we got the mower back yesterday morning just a couple hours before a storm was gonna hit. As I looked out at our virtual forest, I knew I was in for a pretty intense workout so I’d need some kick-ass live music to give me the juice necessary to beat the rain…which brings me to Billy Joel.
Before starting the machine I tuned into Billy’s “12 Gardens Live” and was off to the races. I’d forgotten what an absolutely incredible album this is. If you’re not familiar with it, you might wanna grab a copy cuz I think it’s Billy’s quintessential work.
It turned the task into a joyful romp that left me both drenched and grinning from ear to ear.
Thanks for the help, Billy!
“It’s BTO–they’re Canada’s answer to ELP, Their big hit was “TCB.” That’s how we talked in the ’70s. We didn’t have a moment to spare.”~Homer Simpson
Anyone who tells you their definition of classic rock is the right one is full of shit, including me.
No, wait…especially me.
Dig whatcha dig!
Just once I would have loved to have heard bandleader Lawrence Welk say “Play that funky music white boy.”
I’ve heard Robin Williams doing Lawrence Welk saying it, but never the real deal.
Who would you like to hear utter those words?
My friend Louis has been a faithful reader here since early on, and recently he sent me this video of a couple singing Brewer & Shipley’s “One Toke Over the Line” back in 1971 on the Lawrence Welk show.
I couldn’t help but laugh when I heard Lawrence call this a ‘modern spiritual.’
NOW FOR THE DEEP CUTS was the headline in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Tuesday.
Honest to Buddha, my immediate thought when I saw that at 5:00 AM was that local radio stations were finally gonna start playing what used to be called ‘Deep Cuts,’ which were the ‘other’ songs on classic albums…you know, the ones that weren’t ‘hits.’
No, I’m not a total idiot…I knew they were talking about the political nonsense coming out of Madison.
However, thanks to my selective obliviousness, I was able to immediately translate that headline into something I love. And I love, love, love Rock & Roll.
Selective obliviousness is a significant component of my Rock & Roll Philosophy. It means taking care of my little corner of the world with all the love, appreciation and service I can muster…all the while deflecting from my consciousness things that do not fit my interpretations of love, appreciation and service.
It’s simple, although admittedly not always easy.
Tuesday morning I realized just how much progress I’m making…and I’m immensely grateful.
Hey rockers, just a reminder my commercial airs again this Sunday night on ABC during Extreme Makeover: Home Edition at 8:00 PM EST here in the US.
Then next Sunday it’s on during The Apprentice. I wonder if Donald Trump’s gonna try to fire my ass
My Rock and Roll Philosophy revolves around the concept of fun.
