While I was at Summerfest yesterday, The Big Gig’s most excellent VP of Marketing, John Boler, took me on a tour of the grounds to see some of the renovations. Here’s a little look see of what’s in store…

Hittin’ the note…because music matters

September 01, 2009 By: Joe Heuer Category: Cool Rock & Roll Stuff, Rock & Roll News, Rock and Roll History, Rockin' Interviews No Comments →

I always get excited when our mail carrier Wayne brings the latest edition of Hittin’ the note…because music matters. It’s my favorite magazine and I typically devour it shortly after it arrives.

Publisher John Lynskey always serves up a delicious blend of interviews, photos and in-depth album reviews. I don’t know what the official relationship is between the magazine and the Allman Brothers, but ABB is always featured prominently.

The latest issue features tasty interviews with Derek Trucks, Bob Weir, Davy Knowles and the legendary Mac Rebennack, better known as Dr. John. One of the things I love about the mag is the terrific interviews where we get to read what the artists have to say, as opposed to typical articles that share just a brief quote from the artists.

Recent editions have included fabulous interviews with Warren Haynes, Dave Mason and one of my all-time faves, Jorma Kaukonen. Additionally, the photos from ABB’s 40th anniversary run at The Beacon are absolutely fantastic.

Hittin’ the note is a must read in my world.

Rolling Stone Magazine at Summerfest

June 28, 2009 By: Joe Heuer Category: Cool Rock & Roll Stuff, Rock and Roll History, Rockin' Interviews 3 Comments →

I just had a very cool visit with former Rolling Stone publisher Terry Hummel here at Summerfest. He’s a walking encyclopedia of Rock & Roll and I found myself spellbound just listening to him.

Stay tuned as I’ll do an interview with Terry in the next couple days.

You never know who you’ll run in to at The Big Gig so come on down and join the party.

Felix Cavaliere After the Show

June 28, 2009 By: Joe Heuer Category: Rock & Roll Concerts, Rock & Roll Songs, Rock and Roll History, Rockin' Interviews No Comments →

After Felix Cavaliere’s spectacular set, I got a chance to spend a few minutes with this legend to get his impressions of The Big Gig.

Here are his thoughts:

“We have a ball when we come to Milwaukee, I must say. The people here are great and I love coming back.”

Regarding their set list of Rascals hits along with the medleys of other classic rock tunes:

“We’re all kind of from the same musical family and really loving these songs, and it’s genuine not only from the fans’ point of view but also from the musicians. Everybody I know loves to play them and loves to hear them, and it’s still really fun playing them.”

And it’s really fun watching you play them, Felix!!

As WAMI president Lance Shellman said to me immediately after I finished speaking with Felix, “You are one happy guru.”

Indeed.

Rock & Roll Weekend at BookExpo America!

June 02, 2009 By: Joe Heuer Category: Cool Rock & Roll Stuff, Rock & Roll Concerts, Rockin' Interviews No Comments →

It was a wild and woolly, not to mention groovy, rock & roll weekend at BookExpo in New York City. It’s amazing how many Deadheads come out of the woodwork when you walk around a business event wearing Grateful Dead t-shirts!

Met some rock & roll icons, saw great concerts, checked out the cool rock books coming out this fall and just had a ton of fun.

Several publishers expressed interest in my rock & roll books, which was a most excellent treat.

Today I’m just gonna kick back, reflect and sort out my thoughts…I’ll do several posts on my experiences in the coming weeks.

Feeling immensely grateful and blessed.

Steven Tyler: Rock & Roll Keynote at BEA Part 2

May 29, 2009 By: Joe Heuer Category: Cool Rock & Roll Stuff, Rock and Roll History, Rockin' Interviews 4 Comments →

After Clarence Clemons left the stage, part two of the opening keynote at BookExpo yesterday featured an interview with Aerosmith frontman and rock & roll icon Steven Tyler and his best friend Mark Hudson (of Hudson Brothers fame).

It was another treat to be front and center with a legend as Steven regaled us with a day in the life of a rock star, as well as discussing his upcoming book, Does the Noise in My Head Bother You? A Rock ‘N’ Roll Memoir.

From Steven’s description, this book will be a must read for rock and roll gurus everywhere. Unfortunately, Steven has no idea when the book will come out as he is still in the process of writing it. I guess we’ll just have to wait impatiently for this one.

Engaging and hilarious, Steven rocked the house!

The Who/Tommy: Rock & Roll History

May 23, 2009 By: Joe Heuer Category: Rock and Roll History, Rockin' Interviews 3 Comments →

After posting about the 40th anniversary of The Who’s classic album Tommy, one of our fellow Gurus sent me this  comment and most excellent link, which I had to pass along.

“In the Studio, a syndicated rock radio show in the U.S. will have a two part, two hour show dedicated to the 40th Anniversary of TOMMY with interview guest Pete Townshend.”
