Jeff Beck Tears Up Milwaukee
Two weeks after being inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the second time, Jeff Beck played Turner Hall in Milwaukee Saturday night. This legendary guitar god rarely tours, so I was both delighted and grateful that he chose my hometown to deliver one of the fourteen shows on this tour.
There are simply not enough superlatives to describe Jeff Beck. The last time I saw him was in the late 1980’s when he toured with the late Stevie Ray Vaughn and, twenty years later, he is still absolutely at the top of his game. Jeff has the ability to coax sounds out of his guitar that no one else can.
Nattily attired in all white, Beck played with the fire and fury of a man possessed by angelic spirits. In other words, the show was smoldering, scorching and downright ass-kicking!
It was one of those nights where I spent quite a bit of time with my mouth hanging open in awe. There was a magical quality that I experience only when I’m in the presence of true greatness. And Beck is as good as it gets.
From the opening notes of “Beck’s Bolero” that sent chills up and down my spine to the closing encore of “Peter Gunn,” I was in my glory. And by the smiles I saw all around me, so was the rest of the capacity crowd of 900.
The classics were in abundance as he delivered three from Wired, my all-time favorite Jeff Beck album. When they blasted into “Led Boots” I thought I was gonna wet myself. Same with “Blue Wind.” And the set-closing version of the Beatles’ “A Day in the Life” was, to say the least, surreal.
I had a feeling as I walked into the venue this was gonna be a special night…and it certainly was.
Thanks, Jeff!
