Rock & Roll History for October 16
A whole slew of cool Rock & Roll stuff happened on this date. Here are a few of the things that resonated with me.
October 16, 1951: Little Richard had his first recording session.
October 16, 1964: The Beatles appeared on the TV show Ready, Steady, Go.
October 16, 1965: The Beatles recorded “Day Tripper.”
October 16, 1966: Grace Slick played live for the first time with the Jefferson Airplane at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Gracie brought not only her dynamite voice to the band, but also a couple of classic songs from her previous band, The Great Society. “Somebody to Love” & “White Rabbit” were both featured on the Surrealistic Pillow album, which happens to be one of my Desert Island Discs.
October 16, 1976: Stevie Wonder released his brilliant triple album, Songs in the Key of Life…speaking of Desert Island Discs.
October 16, 1986: Chuck Berry played his 60th birthday concert in St. Louis with a little help from Eric Clapton & Keith Richards. I found this a bit odd, since his birthday is October 18th.
October 16, 1992: The Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert was held at Madison Square Garden in NY. A who’s who of performers appeared and a Tribute to Dylan DVD was recorded.
I told you it was a whole slew of cool stuff.
